Step On Through!

Let me take you back about 5 1/2 years ago, I was pregnant with the boy and we were redoing our bonus room above the garage. Exciting I know!
We did the majority of the work ourselves to help save money. Basically when we moved in to our home the room above our garage was storage space, it looked kind of like this....

Not ours but close.
We insulated, hung drywall, painted, ran electrical and added a new window.
(By we, I mean my hubby and his friend, I am a touch pregnant at this point but I did paint)

Anyway, my hubby decided to run some wires from the basement all the way up to the bonus room for the computer. Now, the bonus room is just above the garage, not the whole house, so he needed to go into the "attic" in order for the lines to be able to be reached and hooked up right, blah blah blah...I don't really understand that stuff so I just took my little flashlight, went to the basement and waited for him to feed the wires down through the walls and into the holes that he drilled into the basement ceiling.

So there I stand, flashlight in hand, waiting for this wire to come down for me to grab and pull through....
waiting.....waiting....waiting......

I then faintly hear some yelling and screaming.

Not knowing what was taking so long, I went upstairs to the main floor, turned into the family room and saw this.....

YUP, that would be my hubby's foot through my family room ceiling!!!!

with this all over the floor.

Was I mad you ask???

Actually, I burst out laughing!!!!
I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants (after of course asking if hubby was ok, which he was)
I couldn't even believe that this happened!

This is the stuff of home video shows.

Too bad we didn't have a camera rolling!

Well, needless to say it was a good thing that we did a lot of the work in the bonus room ourselves because we needed that money to hire someone to patch the hole!
There was no way we were attempting that!

Fast forward to now, the ceiling is patched and looks great but you can still see a ring around where they fixed it because we couldn't match the paint exactly and I wasn't painting a ceiling at 5 months pregnant!

So that brings me to my next big project....

My family room!

Right now it currently looks like this..

various shades of white scattered here and there to see how it looks in different parts of the room during different times of the day.
I have no idea what colors they are but I did settle on a color thanks to my friend Kat who suggested Simply White by Benjamin Moore.
It is not too bright white but not too cream either.
I really love it!

Below are a few of my inspiration pictures. I am really looking to "beach up" my family room a bit more, create a cottage feel.

(source unknown)

This project is going to take me a while I think!
I am starting with the ceilings and will work my way down to the floors.
Mostly it is painting and then with the help of my mom and dad,
(thank you mom and dad!)
we will no longer have to live on sub-flooring!
Woo Hoo!!!

So hopefully you will bare with me on this journey and I am sure that I will be needing your help along the way!!
I will show you some before, during and after pictures, I know, you are so excited about that, to show you my progress. :)

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!
And remember to
THINK SPRING!!!!!

Aww Michelle, I could so feel your pain, or shall I say your hubbies, he he. Not because I ever fell through the ceiling, but we moved in our home when I was prego too, and I remember painting, gardening, and all that fun jazz, with a big ol belly. Then again, painting house with my last little guy too.

You have a huge project in the works, but slowly, you will get it done, and lucky for us, we get to go along for the ride, YAYYYY!!!

Luv ya,

Bella :)

OMGosh! I can totally picture you laughing and saying "honey, stick your leg out a little further so I can take a picture!". Is it wrong that I noticed the cool light fixture before his leg thru the ceiling?

Anyway, if your living room turns out even half as good as your bedroom, I'm sure it'll be golden.

oh michelle! I can totally relate to your hubby's hole, since my hubby made one too!!! only, my hubby fell all the way through to the floor below! it was valentine's day and i was mad at him (can't remember why), i was down stairs and heard this horrible noise and went running upstairs to find hubby sitting on the floor in his office and pink insulation
EVERYWHERE!! luckily he was fine, but rather shocked to be in the attic one minute and on the floor below the next! it turned out to be a very PINK valentines day. he patched the hole, but it has never been primed or painted...going on three years now.

i love all your inspiration rooms......i am sure your room will be beautiful.

happy weekend to you,
erin

Wow, he really did come through the ceiling didn't he! Glad he wasn't hurt and I would have laughed too, like you once I knew he was ok! We had a patch like that in the kitchen ceiling of our old house! I can't wait to see it when it's all finished, you must be so excited! And I love Simply White, so glad you do too! Thanks for the sweet shout out!

OH MICHELLE! I need to show this post to my husband!!!! What these men go through for us...I came home yesterday to see the dining room COMPLETELY PAINTED but my husband was not smiling. He was so fatigued and he was not his usual smiling self! However, we hung the chandelier, moved the dining room furniture back in but then he was pretty quiet the rest of the evening! BUT THIS, THIS IS SCARY STUFF! WOW. Your home is gonna be a beach paradise my friend, and I cannot wait to see your pictures. I still don't have some of the details I need in order to really take good pics, but I am enjoying the process so much, and I know you are too. Lovely ideas, good PICTURES and a wonderful husband do you have...love , Anita

I have a similar story! :) When I was little, my parents were building an addition onto our house and the SAME thing happened to my Dad! His leg fell right through the kitchen ceiling. So my mom cleaned it all up, and about 30 minutes later...his friend who was helping him did the same thing in a different spot. It was just too funny. :)

Can't wait to see how your room turns out! Have a great weekend.

not sure how I got here (smile) but I am so glad I did tonight....I'm in the process of gathering inspiration for my redesigned family room - and I collect old sailboats (we used to sail when I was growing up) and I have tons of seashells...but I don't want it to look all cluttery (does that make sense?)
anyhow - you aren't the only one thinking beach!

Great story Michelle! I'm right there with ya! I have a room redo that I'm in the middle of planning and all because of the ceiling (water spot) I have to paint our foyer, loft, and hallway that are all open up to one another. I hoping to post photos later this week. It looks like yours with paint samples. Not a pretty look and I believe this is going to be a loooong process. I'll probably loose many readers over it 'cause they'll be so bored! ha ha

Hi Michelle! Love your photo of the foot through the ceiling -- too funny! Your inspiration pictures are lovely. This is my first visit to your blog (not sure how I've missed it -- it's wonderful). It's great to find another beach lovers blog! We've been blogging about our beach house renovation (it's currently up on nine foot high stacks of cribbing, as we raised it to recapture the view). Oh Michele, I can so relate to your ceiling fiasco. My husband, who is not a fixer upper but likes to think he is, is always doing something like this around our house. Last time he was trying to fix a bathroom pipe, a huge leak sprung and next thing we knew water was everywhere. What a mess we had. After that he said he would never fix anything again. LOL....I am holding him to that statement. I found my way over here from the DIY blog. Happy to meet you. ~ Lynn @thevintagenest

Believe it or not my husband did the same thing! We lived in a townhouse when we were first married that had a walk up attic. He went up to get something and stepped between the floor joints and came through the ceiling!

My father-in-law did the same thing a couple years ago! He would have had a very long fall from their tall ceilings though. Thankfully he didn't fall either. Great story! You gave me a good chuckle :) Can't wait to see what you do! Your bedroom is just divine!

Good evening my precious friend!

Oh sweet one, I so know the difficulty of finding a peaceful moment. This morning I just savored the early, quiet hum of God's sweet voice. I enjoyed the hard work all around me in my nest, lovingly created by both me and Ruben, and I was grateful. I have been feeling extra tired, and am experiencing a need to have Spring Break come soon from school. I guess we have to snatch whatever moments we do have to take in all the peace. I ended up staying home from the Gala because I was just too tired. It was best for me because it was SNOWING AGAIN on Friday night and to go out in that cold was not my idea of fun! What do you have planned for the week? Well I tell you, we are just about done with all the hard work on the project. Just details like hanging pictures and getting the electrician to come in to hang the main chandelier is left, but the rest is relaxation. I think the building project took a lot out of us, and maybe you too.....take in the beauty and dream dear one.
