Floors and a Mess

So last weekend I finished the bonus room floor.  I really like it for being plywood but it was a lot of work that I hope to not have to do in a long long time.  :)

If you don't recall what I did I first painted the sub flooring a light gray, Smooth Stone from Gliddon.
I then used a wood graining tool, white paint and a glaze to make grains into the paint.
I then went over all of that with a stain called Sun Bleached.
WHEW!
It is hard to see but hopefully you can kind of get the idea.
I would show you the whole floor but you will see why I didn't at the end of this post.  :)

Of course certain someone's have to be in the picture.

With the floors done I started on the furniture that I planned to use.
I had a kitchen island from Crate and Barrell that I purchased a long time ago that was too big for our kitchen.  I used it in my previous craft room but decided that I would try to make it a bit prettier.

I picked up Annie Sloan Coco and painted it.
It is a really pretty brownish-gray
(again, hard to see with my amazing photography skills)

It wasn't bad but it wasn't fitting into my vision so I picked up some dark stain and stained the top.

Well needless to say that sucked!
I mean it is really pretty and I like how it turned out, but it was even farther from my vision so I resorted to my  backup plan.
I stole the desk from my daughters room.
All she uses it for is to gather junk that she says she needs.
I will try to find a new desk for her with drawers to hide everything. :)

SO
here is where I am.....

I feel like I am no further from the last time I posted about this room but I am plugging away.
My goal is to get it finished before Thanksgiving.
Crossing my fingers and toes on that one!

I also want to thank you for all your wonderful comments, emails and friendship.
I am sorry if I don't get back to everyone on each post, time seems to go so quickly these days.
Please know that I read and LOVE all your comments.

Hugs!!!

Don't you hate when you spend so much time on a piece & then its not what you wanted?! Uggh...I have done that so many times & its so aggravating! I think that piece turned out beautiful, but I understand that it may not be the look you were going for! The floors are looking lovely though!:) The room will come together in time...try not to worry about it!! Hope you have a great day!!

Oh my Michelle! You are working so hard... And the floor is grand. I would have never atempted such a feat. But you did great. Proud of you as always!

It already looks so good! There is something so inspiring about this project - you surely get it done in time! Have a lovely day!

We all totally understand the 'dance' that we have to do to get a finished space, and I feel your pain. It will come together, at the last minute no doubt, and you will love the results. The time between then and now will probably make you want to tear your hair out ... which will make the 'finished' even sweeter.

WOW Michelle the floors turned out so awesome!! Isn't it funny how the projects we start always seem to take longer than we expect - oh well they are totally worth it in the end :).

Wow, Michelle, the floors look great! That's too bad about the island. I've had that happen to me many times...I have some great vision and then it's kind of a let down when it doesn't come together the way I hope. Anyway, I know the room is going to be beautiful, I can't wait to see it all done :)

Wow, lots of stuff in the works!
Knowing you it will be finished early ;)
Can't wait to see the island when it's done. I know how you feel, I've slipped far from a vision or two in my day., Still, paint can be repainted, I always save things and try later when I'm feeling more creative. hugs tami

The floor looks fantastic. I'm sure it was a ton of work but well worth it that's for sure. I like the desk you stole from your daughter. My son doesn't use his desk much either. He's usually just on his bed with his laptop. Why did I bother to get it?

Half way through a project is always the "messy time" in my mind. Hang in there girl. The floors are looking fabulous and was probably the most time consuming part of the the whole room. Very soon your going to have a room that you love and all this worrying about how long it took to get it done will no longer matter.

You crack me up Michelle! It always has to get worse before it gets better right? :-) I thought that first piece looked pretty good but I do understand if it doesn't quite match your vision for the room. I love that you snatched your daughter's desk! LOL! The floors look absolutely incredible and I can totally see where you are headed with this space. It will be beautiful!

The floors look great, I see you mastered that tool. Things are changing here in our life so I doubt I will get to do my floors this year but the changes are not unwelcome. I am sure this space will come together, just remember to enjoy the process.

Awww...Michele, sorry your table didn't turn out as planned, although it is very cool with those mesh shelves! I too have had plenty of projects fail. No doubt you will find the perfect place and use for it in the future.

Don't worry about not being able to return every comment. Take encouragement from them to keep doing what you're doing...being a wonderful wife & mommy, a great blogging friend, and an inspiration to us all!

well, the floor (what we can see) looks fantastic! and I bet you'll have everything knocked into shape before you know it.. it always looks the worst when you're putting the furnishings together. But as long as you have that sweet big eyed doggie in the room, it'll be wonderful!

The floors turned out great. I really like that kitchen island with the mesh shelves, but I totally agree with you on the color. The dark brown top doesn't look quite right to me. I do like the soft brown of the lower section tho. Can you cover the top with an oil cloth? Something with a cute design or print? What color are your walls?

Hello sweet friend!

I was so excited when the title of your post popped up "floors"! I was dying to see them, and think they look gorgeous! You did such a WONDERFUL job on them, and what a lot of work it was for you! I hear you, truly, on not wanting to do it again any time soon! I felt just like that when I painted my kitchen floor! But now you can look at it, and think how beautiful it is! Yea! I also love the candid shot of the work in progress! It is real and honest and made me smile! :) I can't wait to see how the furniture turns out!

I hope your weekend was a good one, and that you have a beautiful Monday!

Blessings,
