Mantel Planks

Since we did the fireplace on Sunday and it went rather quickly I thought that while I had a few seconds I would show you how it came out. I want to thank you for all your visits and comments about my family room redo and hopefully I am not boring you with this project and hopefully I will show you the ENTIRE room one day! :)

Anyway, I have always loved the plank walls that I see in old cottages and homes and even faked one in my kitchen that you can see here if you have a minute.
Knowing that hubby was not up to doing another wall again, especially after putting in the floors and everything else that he has been so graciously helping me with, I decided that just a partial plank wall will do, and what better spot for one than over the fireplace.

Before:

After:

It was pretty easy to do, well, it looked pretty easy to do since I observed most of the time.
We, or he, just cut the boards to length, trimmed the top and bottom boards so they looked even and then nailed them up!
I then slapped on some leftover paint and hung up my treasures.

I love how it turned out and it adds another, what I feel, beachy texture to the room and makes the fireplace seem a bit more interesting.

The 'old' fishing net I got at TJ Maxx along with the bigger sand bird.
The starfish and beach grass I shopped from the house.

But see the little sand bird?

Isn't he cute?!
My friend Anita from Going A Little Coastal asked me were I had picked up the larger bird. I told her where and mentioned that it would have been great if they had different sizes.
WELL,
being the sweet gal that she is, when she picked up her sand bird she told me that there were indeed different sizes and brought home this little guy to send to me!!! :)

I love him!

She also sent me this amazing smelling candle that smells like the sea!!

Thank you SO much again Anita, he is perfect with his big brother!!! :)

This week in between taxing the kids around I am tackling this mess!

This would be our bonus room or grave yard of all things not needed at the time.
My goal is to make it a tropical sitting room for the kids.

UGH!!!

I will be back Thursday to join the adorable Sarah from Modern Country Style and her
DEFINE YOUR BLOG linky party!

Click on the bottom above to find out what it is all about!

HUGS!!

The planks combined with beach grass and the other coastal elements just work so well together. So glad the big guy got a little buddy! Oh, and as for you dear hubby doing the hard yards, someone has to be site supervisor. I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with a tropical theme. It's still a beach theme but just different to what you've done before. Mango smoothie anyone?

You're a true fireplace transformer!! Sure know how to make them beachy!! And it wouldn't be complete without the little guy!

Anita @ GoingALittleCoastal said...

Oh you are so very welcome! He looks great with the big guy. But you know, your big guy is bigger then the one I found. So I guess there are 3 sizes out there. And the net? I love that! I can't believe that you found it at TJ's. It really looks old. The plank wall was genius. I need to find a spot somewhere to do this. Looks fantastic! I just took some shots of my two so I'll put them up in a bit. :)

Hi Michelle ~
is it too late to get on this board wall bandwagon? Cause I love it. Really. I want to do it. But I'm stashing back some pallets to do mine... cause I'm just not going to spend the money on new wood...you know?
Your's looks so good. I love the dining room area-- but I really love THIS OVER THE FIREPLACE!!!

also-- HOW ABOUT that Tropical Sitting room? I think it will look so good when your done... cause your soo soo talented.
What I really appreciate is the raw honesty of the room ....now! I thought I was the only person crazy enough to show my messy rooms!

Love ya for that!

Good heavens, I am so late...but to see the progress here, to see the hard work you have put into this place is an inspiration. Knowing how much work and energy this takes, I so appreciate and FEEL what you are going through!!! But I have no kids to cart around, but having a full-time teaching job just may compare in fatigue! Oh dearest Michelle, your beach dwelling is looking so breezy and perfect!!!! EVERYTHING IS JUST RIGHT!!!! HAVE FUN, Anita

Michelle, I love the planks, and have never seen that done, you're so clever! It does add a Beachy texture too. The birds are darling. You home is so gorgeous, and so inspiring. It's good to see your "graveyard of all things not needed" hehe, although, I still think you're perfect. I'm sure it will look as amazing as the other rooms when you're finished. Our graveyard is found in our office.

As you know I've been MIA while I was getting my shop open, so I came by and had to look back over everything I missed here. Then after I went in the kitchen to get a towel to clean up the drool on my desk, I'm finally able to comment.

Well honey, I just adore everything you've done! You have such a knack for creating an inviting, relaxing ambience in your home. I saw your birds at Anita's, loved that her son calls them "birds on sticks!" I have a similar set and they just make me smile.

The plank boards above your fireplace are the perfect touch and what you did with your eating area is so pretty. I love the photos of the breeze catching your curtains, oh heck, I just love it all! Between your decorating touch and Maya finding all those goodies she puts on her blog, I could just be in beach cottage heaven!
